Hops

Hops acts as a mild sedative, helping to reduce stress and anxiety in the body and mind. They are full of flavonoids that are anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-bacterial; the perfect herb for January after the excesses of the festive season and harshness of winter take their toll on the body.

They can relieve tension, restlessness and sleeplessness. Drinking a decoction or infusion of hops an hour or so before bedtime can assist in getting a decent night’s sleep if you’re struggling. I put a little in my tea during the day to aid calmness and reduce any cortisol spikes that may occur.

Magickal uses and correspondences

Hops are a masculine herb of Mars and the element of Air. Make a dream sachet with hops and lavender to place inside your pillowcase for better sleep. Use as a healing incense or burn alongside Tuesday candle spells.

Hops are also associated with Cerridwen, the Celtic goddess of transformation, rebirth and inspiration. To honour and connect with her, fill a bowl with dried hops and leave on your altar. You can leave your wishes at her feet, with gratitude as always.

Contraindications: hops are not recommended for people diagnosed with depression as it can interfere with medications and exacerbate symptoms. Also best not to mix medicinal usage of hops with alcohol as that will be too much for the body to deal with at once. You’ll get very, very drowsy.
